The best things gestate

in the secret darkness

and only emerge

when the portents say it's time

The first time I made jewelry was in 5th grade. Someone gave me polymer clay for my birthday, and my mom and I made beads together. I decided I wanted us to start a business. We called it Black Moon. I tried to sell stuff to my classmates, but they were children and didn't have any money. At that point, it became a hobby. I would spend hours making little creatures out of clay and paper clips, and any little metal and glass bits I would find. I was like a crow, always looking out for little stones and shiny things that could withstand the heat of an oven. Using small objects I found, things that were discarded or perhaps fell from a hole in someone's pocket, meant a lot to me. It was my way of recycling, and also giving new life and value to something that was loved by someone once but was now forgotten, yet I still found them to be beautiful.

In 2013, I revived my idea to sell my art and created my first website. I did it myself and it was pretty terrible. That was when I landed on the name Narwhal, although I didn't have a cohesive theme yet.

Narwhals represented for me the unique quality of my pieces, the fragility and beauty of the balance of nature and evolution, and the importance of recycling and protecting the planet.

As I focused on my "regular" job, my creations fell by the wayside. All my creativity, energy, and focus was channeled into my career.

The past few years have put a lot into perspective for us all floating on this pale blue dot, a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. I decided if I'm going to survive, it's time to focus my energy on my first true passion.

Narwhal Curiosities is the result of a life's collection of experiences, feelings, memories, fears, and dreams. My hope is that each piece stirs an emotion within, awakens something that has been long dormant in the soul of whoever possesses it. As put so eloquently by someone who is much better at writing than I am, "The best things gestate in the secret darkness, and only emerge when the portents say it's time."
